Using all our Maths skills to make Chocolate Brownies!!!

Today was the last day of Term 3. To celebrate we made some chocolate brownies. We had to use a lot of Maths to get the job done.

First we had to double the recipe to make enough for everyone. We used our doubles, 2x tables, fractions and place value knowledge to work this out.

Then we looked at the equipment and discussed the names and shapes of things, we found geometry and measurement helped us here. We also compared the weight of the brown sugar and the butter, most of us agreed the brown sugar was heavier!!

After than we had to measure out the ingredients and mix it all together, our reading helped us to know what to do, Janelle helped us when we used the stove top.

After it was all mixed we put it in the oven. To know when it would be ready we skip counted in 5's around the clock. It was the end of Morning Tea when it was ready. Great!!!

But our next problem was to work out how to cut the slices. We used Arrays and our Multiplication strategies to plan this before we cut the slices. We planned to cut one into 5x5=25 and the other into 4x6=24. We hoped we might get enough for 2 slices each!!

Mr Evans then cut it cause that was a bit tricky and dangerous... and the results are....

Friday STRIVE

This week the weather forced us inside for 'Friday STRIVE'.

But this didn't put of a group of budding engineers from their bridge building task in Room 3.

It was great to see the kids working together, sharing ideas, problems solving and finally succeeding to bridge the gap between two 'towns'.

Well done buys and girls!!

Production Photos

Last week saw all our hard work and practice pay off with two excellent shows on Wednesday and Thursday nights!! The kids performed with confidence and enjoyment and were really excited to show their whanau what we have been learning about the performing arts!! Below are just some of the photos from the 2 shows. Well Done kids!!!!

Show & Tell, Term 3 Week 8.

This week we had a lot of things to share and discuss...

As always we had some soft toys to show and discuss, we had toy dogs with great names like Milo and Coffee. We also had some cool Pillow Pets!! Mahiro (our visitor from rm 7) showed us his new soccer ball. It got some good use that lunch time too!!

We are learning about 'area'

We think AREA is:

"You cover up the area"

"Like putting juice in a bottle"

"Sitting on a chiar fulling up the space"

"Toys filling up the table"

This is us filling the 'area' of our class mat!!

"First we put dominos for the perimeter and then we got some counters for the area"

"Here is area from our laptops and they are filling up the area"

"That whole area is filled up with lunch boxes"

We think PERIMETER is:

"It's around something"

"You sit around a shape"

"You measure the outside"

This is us showing the 'perimeter' of our class mat!!

"We made a circle round the lid"

"The edge of the sink is the perimeter"

Measuring Area in Maths

Today we started learning about a new attribute to measure. It was called 'area'.

First we thought about other things we have measured this year like length and weight. We talked with our partners about using counters and sticks to measure, comparing our desk lengths and using scales to compare and measure.

Then we though about other things we might measure around us. We discovered that we could measure the outside of a circle (thanks Bridie and Alexis) and that it's called the 'perimeter'. We also thought we could measure across the circle, and that it's called the 'width'.

Then we looked at areas we know like a desk, rugby field and a pool and how we could measure or describe them.

Finally we worked at two stations.

The first was a challenge to make the 'snake' with the largest area using play dough. It was cool fun. Jahdae had the best way to make his play dough flat!!

The next challenge was too see how much space our body 'takes up', and to 'fill the space' with whiteboards or paper to measure it. These were the results:

We discovered that is we made our arms and legs wide we made up more space and had a greater area!!

What things could you find the area of around your home? Maybe your bed? The tv? The table/coffee table? . . . I think I see a Homework Challenge coming from this idea!!!
