The Homework Challenge "S"

This week saw us get all the way to the letter 'S'. Well done so far!!!

It's been great to se how students ideas have developed over the year and we are seeing some new and interesting presentations, even now in Term 3!!

This weeks winner is Bridie, who did a presentation on "Seven", as she turned seven this week. Happy Birthday Bridie and it looked like you had a great pool party.

Come and see 'The Goblin Next Door" Junior Production, Week 8 Wed or Thu.

Hi,

We have the School Productions in Week 8, on Wednesday and Thursday night.

We are all working hard on our parts, the costumes and set design.

To promote the production and learn about posters and writing to an audience we created our own posters using the 'Comic Life' software program.

We then voted on the best poster.... and the winner was Logan!!! Well done Logan. Can you spot her poster around the school???

Our "Mathmagicians" in action

Recently I have been blown away by the giant steps that our learners have been making in maths.

We have learners who now know numbers to 1,000 and beyond!! They can add numbers to 100 or use place value to add Hundreds, Tens and Ones!!

On Monday we had two students shine. They were Holly and Emma. They saw a new kind of problem and a strategy to solve these problems for the first time, and in only 2 minutes they could come up to the Interactive whiteboard and do it on their own!!!

Amazing work Holly and Emma. You are both 'risk takers' and 'mathmagicians'.

Here is Emma solving 54 + 19. How would you solve it??

Well... Emma 'borrowed' 1 from the 54 and made the 19 into 20. Then the problem was 53 + 20 which she could then solve by simply adding 50 + 20 + 3 to get 73.

Here is Holly solving 42 + 19. Again how would you solve it??

Holly also used the 'borrow and compensate' strategy to change the problem to 41 + 20, then it was easy!! Just add 40 + 20 + 1 to get 61!!!

The Homework Challenge Winner 'O' and Show and Tell Tm 3, Wk 3.

This week we had a lot of Homework Challenges around Octopus, Orca and Oceans. It was great to re-visit Octopus, we could see the connections between the 'oct' in octopus and the 'oct' that we have been hearing in octagon in our Geometry learning. Chimari also taught us to say 'tako', the Japanese word for octopus!!! We also learnt that Orca (though known as killer whales) are part of the dolphin family. Interesting!!!

Anyway, well done Ava for a very well presented challenge!!!

Show and Tell

This week we had a lot of things to show!!! Robert had some impressive Bey Blades. Ben, Santana and Jahdae were proud of what they earned from the Treasure Box this week. Holly and Alexis showed us the Japanese they learnt from Chimari, while Chmari showed a pottery that she had painted at home. Logan, Emma and Tenessy all showed some toys from home. It's great to see such a wide range of interests and sharing of ideas through Show & Tell. Ka Pai!!

some more animations from Term 2 have appeared!!!

Thanks Ms Mehring for doing these cool 'Puppet Pals' animations with Room 3!! They are all based on our learning of Nursery Rhymes and developing our understanding of characters, plots and messages.

P.S. Puppet Pals is a Tablet App you can download for free and it's great fun for the whole family to play!!!

Keeping fit and funky!!!

As part of our daily fitness when the weather is too cold and wet we do Jump-Jam (a fun kind of aerobics/Hip Hop). This week we are doing the 'Dino Stomp' and 'Awesome Rainbows' tracks.

This helps to keep our heart and lungs healthy and build our co-ordination and balance too. As well as being great fun!!!

Feel free to join along with us!!!!

Here are Room 3 rocking to Dino Stomp!!!

Show & Tell - Term 3, Week 2

This week we had a great turn out of treasures on show!!

It seems that August is the Birthday Month at Huia Range with a lot of discussion of the birthdays on this weekend and coming up.

It's great to see that the friendships in Room 3 also extend to other classes and whanau at Huia Range School.

Le'Kaia and Jah-Taea showed off their presents they got from Sally for their birthdays. "Thanks Sally!!" Logan bought in her toy kitten, Ava followed up her Homework Challenge on football by showing us her phoenix t-shirt, Alexis showed her toy kangaroo from Australia, Santana had loom bands, Rico had a cool photo of him swimming in Rotorua, Shannon nearly has the whole set of "How to train a dragon" toys from McDonalds, and Jai also had a loom band (given to him by Santana).

What a friendly, happy and tight-knit group of kids in Room 3!!!
